Evaluation of a Professional Graduate Program: Master's in Instrumental Chemical Analysis

Abstract

This article presents a case study of the Master's in Instrumental Chemical Analysis (MICA) program at Trent University, a unique graduate professional program designed to bridge the gap between academic training and industry needs in analytical chemistry. The MICA program integrates advanced instrumentation training, experiential learning, and professional development to prepare graduates for careers in government, industry, and research laboratories.

Using program documentation, student and placement host survey feedback, and employment outcomes, this article explores the program’s goals, curriculum, partnerships with government, industry, and academia, and emphasis on the hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation. The article highlights MICA’s role in forming trained analytical laboratory personnel.

This case study contributes to the literature on professional master’s programs by offering insights into how its students are trained to compete for positions in instrumental analytical laboratories. It is intended for educators and administrators interested in developing or refining graduate programs that respond to market needs while maintaining academic rigor.
