Vaping: How Adolescent Mental Health Links to the Use of E-Cigarettes
- Natalia Ali
Abstract
Vaping is rapidly becoming more common among middle and high school students and is one factor in the current deterioration of adolescent mental health (Javed et al., 2022; Masaki et al., 2022). Most people begin vaping because they believe that it helps them cope with anxiety (Fairman et al., 2024). However, researchers have found a relationship between anxiety and depression symptoms and e-cigarette usage (Masaki et al., 2022). This anxiety can also lead to higher suicide rates (Baiden et al., 2021). Given that suicide is the second leading cause of death for teenagers, it is vital to understand the role that vaping might play in adolescent mental health (National Institute for Mental Health, 2024).
