Abstract

Variational data assimilation can be a powerful allied in order to estimate the determination of the trajectory ofa pollutant accidentally spilled on the sea surface, when a set of observation of the resulting pollutant spot isavailable, as well as a computational model of the sea surface dynamics of the region of the accident. In order tosolve the computational problem, the adjoint equations method will be of the paramount importance. Here it ispresented the mathematical foundations of the problem, a brief discussion of some computational issues, and anvery simple example is discussed.
